Virtus appoints Dr Michael Stanford AM to Board of Directors

Sydney, Australia – Virtus Health (“Virtus”, ASX: VRT) announces the appointment of Dr Michael Stanford AM to its Board as a Non-Executive Director with effect from 2 September 2019. Commencing his career as a Doctor, Michael progressed into hospital administration and brings 23 years’ experience as a Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of health care organisations to the Virtus Health Board.

After five years running two of Victoria’s major public hospital networks, Michael was appointed Managing Director and CEO of ASX-300 Company, Australian Hospital Care Limited where he played an integral role in facilitating an acquisition by Mayne Healthcare in 2001.

In 2002, Michael joined St John of God Health Care as Group CEO, a role he held until early 2018. Over the course of 16 years, Michael led the organisation through a period of significant growth and increased revenue by expanding the service offering and growing the business from the 80th to the 20th largest private hospital company in Australia with revenue of $1.7 billion in FY18.

Michael gained ASX100 listed Non-Executive Director experience through his time on the Board of Healthscope prior to its recent acquisition and for three years held the positon of Non-Executive Director at Australia’s third largest Pathology provider, Australian Clinical Labs. In addition, Michael has an active research and development involvement as a Non-Executive Director at Nucleus Network, Australia’s leading Phase One Clinical Trials business.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Business Administration from Macquarie University. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the health care sector and tertiary education.
