Distinguished Virtus Health IVF doctor to receive Member of the Order of Australia
Professor Michael Chapman from IVFAustralia, a member of Virtus Health, has been awarded the Member of the Order of Australia, for his pioneering career in assisted reproductive services and his dedication to teaching the next generation of fertility experts.
One of the most senior practicing fertility specialists in Australia, Professor Chapman has dedicated his 35-year medical career to supporting and promoting fertility science and research.
“I’m honoured to receive this award which recognises and reinforces the importance of obstetrics and gynaecology, and particularly the field of infertility. Throughout my career I’ve strived to train young doctors and mentor them through to specialists, and have enjoyed seeing the development of their careers,” said Professor Chapman.
Professor Chapman played a huge role in the early days of IVF’s pioneering formation, helping to lay the bold foundations which then evolved over the last 40 years into a medical procedure which today is safe, readily available and an everyday reality for so many families.
Professor Chapman said he is particularly proud of contributing to the introduction and uptake of single embryo transfer in 2004, when he was chairman of the IVF directors’ group.
“The introduction of single embryo transfer was a world leading advance which improved the safety of IVF by reducing the number of multiple pregnancies. Australia still leads the world in this area,” said Professor Chapman.
Today, Professor Chapman remains a busy fertility specialist and continues to devote his time to his many patients in the local Sydney and Illawarra area, as well as his passion to fertility education and clinical teaching.
“Within Australia, there are more than a dozen high profile IVF sub-specialists that I am proud to have helped in the development of their careers, and I look forward to continuing this mentoring role,” said Professor Chapman.
Professor Chapman is the Clinical Director for IVFAustralia’s Southern Sydney clinic, as well as the Clinical Director for Women’s and Children’s Health, St George Hospital; founder of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility; CREI Subspecialty examiner RANZCOG and a full-time Professor at UNSW.
