Virtus is pleased to welcome Professor Leslie Burnett AM to the Virtus Genetics team, who will join as a specialist consultant in February 2024.

Leslie is a distinguished and experienced medical pathologist, who specialises in genetic pathology, bioinformatics, and clinical chemistry. He has pioneered and transformed many aspects of the practice of genetic pathology in Australia, including establishing the first carrier screening program in the country.

As he joins Virtus, Leslie will work alongside Dr Eric Lee (genetic pathologist) and the Virtus Genetics team to develop our long-term strategy to grow our genetics offering and capability, with a particular focus on carrier screening. Leslie will share his plethora of knowledge and expertise in the delivery of best-in-class pathology services, including laboratory practices, quality management, patient safety, business performance and clinical management.

Leslie is one of the most respected specialists in his field. He has served as Ministerial appointee, Chairman, or President of a number of National and International bodies in pathology and genetics. He also holds honorary positions as Conjoint Professor and Honorary Professor at both the Universities of Sydney and UNSW. He is a Visiting Scientist at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and consultant to 23Strands.

We are thrilled that Leslie will add Virtus to his extensive CV, and we look forward to seeing his contribution in practice.
